A clean desk tricks your brain into thinking you already did something.
I've fallen for this more times than I want to admit. I'll spend an evening rearranging my setup, nudging the speakers a half inch to the left, swapping the mousepad, angling the monitor so the bezels disappear just right, and by the time I'm done, I feel productive. Satisfied, even. Except I didn't really make anything. I just moved objects around a table.
